Exploring World Cultures through Music



Workshop leader Imani Gonzalez introduces students and teachers to the richness of the cultures of India, SeneGambia (a West African region), and Brazil through children’s songs, rhythms, and musical activities. Through these songs, students learn about the lifestyles and values of children in faraway countries and come to appreciate the similarities and differences between these cultures and their own

NOVEMBER


A Community Photo Documentary  (November 6, 2008)


Teresa Valero, Photography Professor from the University of Tulsa, will work with teachers and students to create a community photo documentary.  Each participant will photograph scenes from his or her neighborhood, then write poetry to further “tell the stories” behind the scenes.

Exploring the Surreal Work of Rene Magritte (Friday-January 23, 2008)


Professor of Art, Chuck Tomlins of the University  of Tulsa will conduct a workshop featuring Surrealist Rene’ Magritte. Participants will be asked to create their own surreal illusions and visual “humor.”  Two and three dimensional expressions will be explored, along with group collaborations in site oriented Installations.

Sing to Freedom: Music of the Underground Railroad  (Spring 2009)


Kim and Reggie Harris will lead a participatory workshop where participants

examine an example of an arts-integrated unit, which focuses on a historical and musical

perspective of the Underground Railroad, the multiracial movement for freedom from slavery in

the 1800s. Through songs and stories, participants explore the flight of slaves to freedom, and

the courageous people of many races and creeds who worked together to help them.


The Living Newspaper  (Spring 2009)


Fran Ringold (Oklahoma Poet Laureate and Editor of Nimrod) will involve students in creating a “living newspaper.”  Steps in the process include: finding the line to self and other (contour drawings, memory as movement),  learning to listen (the interview), hunting and gathering the details…the story, and writing in persona.
